Since the release of the original Fujifilm X100, this line of beautifully designed compact cameras has been a favourite among photographers. The seamless blend of exceptional image quality, ease of use and retro aesthetic makes for a uniquely enjoyable shooting experience. Then, in 2022, someone let the cat out of the bag, and the X100V went viral. Demand skyrocketed so rapidly that Fujifilm Japan temporarily ceased taking new orders due to the flood of backorders.
With the hype just beginning to settle, Fujifilm has unveiled the X100VI. This sixth iteration in the X100 series boasts enhancements and features that elevate this premium compact camera to a new level. So, if you're in the market for an all-in-one camera that expertly blends vintage aesthetics with advanced photo technology, the Fujifilm X100VI might just be for you. Let's explore what makes the X100VI so exciting.
Imaging Power
One of the most significant upgrades announced for the X100VI is the move from a 26.1MP sensor to a 40.2MP BSI X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor. Processing power has also been boosted with the inclusion of Fujifilm’s X Processor 5. As we have seen with the X-T5 and X-H2, this union delivers outstanding resolution and low-light image performance with impressive dynamic range.
Although not pocketable, it is compact enough to fit in a small sling or coat pocket, making it highly portable. So, having that level of image quality and functionality in a camera small enough to grab and go makes it a compelling choice for photographers seeking a high-quality camera for their day-to-day.

Auto Focus
Thanks to the inclusion of the X-Processor 5, we can expect fast and precise autofocus performance from the X100VI. Featuring subject-detection AF based on deep-learning AI technology, the X100VI can detect and track human faces and eyes as well as a broad range of subjects, which include animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, aeroplanes, trains, insects and drones.
Video Capabilities
While the primary focus of the X100 series has always been on photography, Fujifilm recognises the growing demand for solid video capabilities even in a stills-centric camera. The X100VI introduces 6.2K video recording at 30fps and 4K 60fps, making it well-equipped to capture fast-paced action scenes and scenarios where high-definition imagery is a priority. This enhancement makes the X100VI a more versatile tool for content creators who want to dabble in videography without compromising image quality.
Image Stabilisation
We now have in-body image stabilisation for the first time in the X100 series. The 5-axis IBIS mechanism developed for the X100VI offers up to 6 stops of shake compensation for stable hand-held shooting in low-light situations. Including IBIS also makes this an appealing option for those looking to take advantage of the improved video capabilities. Despite the addition of IBIS, the X100VI preserves the compact size and lightweight form factor for which X100 cameras are revered.
Design and Optics
Fujifilm has long understood the appeal of classic design, and as expected, the X100VI carries forward the nostalgic aesthetic that Fujifilm's X100 series is known for, with a couple of notable mentions. There's a subtle refinement in the X100VI's grip for improved handling. In addition to the classic black and silver finishes, the X100VI will be available in a limited edition grey finish to celebrate Fujifilm’s 90th anniversary.
One of the most appreciated upgrades to the X100V was a redesigned 23mm f/2.0 lens that improved sharpness and clarity and elevated the overall image quality. The X100VI retains this lens, which can beautifully resolve every detail of the much higher-resolution sensor with edge-to-edge sharpness.
Film Simulation Modes
A major drawcard of Fujifilm cameras is the unique film simulation modes that enable users to achieve film-like images straight-out-of-camera. Drawing on a solid history of Fujifilm colour science, the X100VI expands on Fuji’s film simulation library to include the new REALA ACE mode in addition to favourites such as Provia, Nostalgic Neg and Velvia for a total of 20 included film simulations.
Our Thoughts
Fujifilm has once again presented a sleek digital camera characterised by a refined vintage design and user-friendly interface. Building upon the strengths of its predecessors, the X100VI features notable improvements across the board. Within its compact and lightweight frame is a high-resolution sensor driven by Fujifilm’s latest processing unit to deliver the same imaging technologies found in the X-series flagship cameras.
The introduction of IBIS in the X100VI is a much-welcome addition and will surely expand the camera's appeal. Bundled with an advanced AI-based autofocus system and enhanced video options, these new features make the X100VI the most versatile X100 camera yet and a clear leader in its field.
The X100VI takes a massive step forward in the evolution of the X100 series. It is a worthy successor to the X100V and a compelling choice for enthusiasts and professionals. Whether you're a street photographer, a travel enthusiast, or seeking a premium quality camera in a stylish compact body to document your day-to-day, the Fujifilm X100VI is poised to meet and exceed your expectations.
